With the rising costs of energy use, households and businesses alike are recognising the need to make small but significant changes to reduce their consumption habits. Small incremental changes can add up to some substantial savings in the long run to help combat rising energy costs – not to mention doing your part to help the environment.
From switching off lights and powering down workstations to investing in green energy, there are a number of steps that your business can take to reduce its energy consumption:
Turn off lights – make sure the last one to leave the office really does switch off the lights. Provide staff with small desk lamps so that if they do stay late, they don’t have to keep all the lights on for one work station.- Power down – be sure to switch off computers and monitors before leaving for the day. Stand by power can represent up to 12% of your energy use and is costing Australians almost $500 million a year, according to Energy Star Australia.
- Upgrade to energy efficient equipment – if your equipment is due for an upgrade, look into more energy efficient models and new technology. This includes energy saving printers that automatically switch to a low energy mode whilst idling or energy efficient appliances in the office kitchen.
- Consider an energy audit – for businesses that are looking to substantially reduce their energy expenditure, conducting an energy audit will provide some valuable insights into what opportunities there are to improve efficiencies.
- Invest in green technology – from solar installations to clean technology programs, you can invest in the future of your industry. You’ll find that your business may qualify for a green lease or similar finance program.
Meanwhile, businesses that are looking to move to new premises may want to consider several energy efficiency indicators for their new offices. The Green Building Council of Australia awards buildings for their environmental performance with green star ratings. Finding offices in a 4 or 5 green star certified building can help your business save money on energy bills and reduce expenses in the long run. Better air quality and environmental factors will also boost staff morale and improve on work performance.
